THE ONLY PERSON I’VE EVER LOVED was taken from me during the first reaping several months ago. I don’t know how, or why, but something changed inside me, turning me into something I never knew existed. Sasha came into my life and saved me, teaching me to use the powers I’d known so little about. But saving me wasn’t her end goal. She handed me over to the Fallen like I meant nothing to her, and now, revenge is all I see. Destroying those who screwed me fills my every thought but there’s one thing standing in my way. He came along and became the one Fallen I don’t think I can live without.

TROUBLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HER NAME. When I found her planting a bomb on the compound, I threw her in a cell, leaving her the option to cooperate or starve. I should kill her and put an end to the suffering she’s determined to impose on all of us, but there’s just something about her that keeps holding me back. The friction between us is explosive. I can’t resist her when she gets that look in her eye, and she damn well knows it.

The Atonement of Lucas Excerpt © Kris Hack 2017

Amelia stands a few yards in front of me, chest heaving. Sweat drips from her forehead and her arms shake. I’ve thrown everything I could at her, and though she’s going to be bruised and in pain tomorrow, she still hasn’t given up.

“That’s enough for tonight,” I say.

Her knives clatter together as she drops them into their box, then she rolls to the ground, throwing her arms and legs out like a starfish.

I walk over and stand above her feet. Thunder cracks above us and I bend closer to her face. “C’mon, we need to head back, unless you want to get—” I’m cut off by the whoosh of rain pelting down on us.

A laugh bubbles out of her wide-open mouth as she attempts to catch the falling droplets with her tongue. Not able to resist, I roll to the ground next to her, facing the leaking sky.

“I used to love the rain.” She sighs. “Back before the lightning took my father, leaving me to my own devices.”

“I’m sorry.”

She turns her head to the side and stares right in my eyes. “I want to love the rain again.”

I love to read, write, and go camping, especially if it’s near a beach somewhere. My furbabies and hubby love the water and so do I! We go camping whenever we can and have a blast cuddling by the fire, eating s’mores and listening to the waves crash against the shore.

Reading is a long-time passion of mine and I’ve always had trouble ending the books when I close them. Characters and scenarios would flow through my mind, further keeping me from much needed sleep. After a time, my own characters began running through my head, demanding to have their stories told.

I am the author of the Ascent series, my first published novel is The Ascension of Laney, a New Adult Paranormal Romance.

Title: Running
Series: The Dark Woods Tales #1
Author: Amanda Kay
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy F/F Romance
Published: April 11, 2017

Trolls…

We’ve all heard the stories. The childhood tales forever imbedded in our minds. Tezzi is no different. She would sit in bed night after night as her mother told her of the trolls.

The tales of the Dark Woods are keeping her up at night. And she dreams of a lush dark place only in fairy tales. Her heart pounds and her feet want to take flight. She feels her mind running.

Running towards a fantasy, running towards adventure, running towards something she’s only dreamed about.

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this story, especially that it is YA. Knowing that it was YA and F/F definitely made me want to read because I figured it would be relationships and romance without the sex (a refreshing change).
I will admit the idea of trolls being the fantasy/paranormal theme of the book had me a bit worried (as I think of the sweet, colourful trolls we grew up with).
While I realize that Running is part of a series, I wished the author had delved a little more into the trolls. However, the story is told from the POV of a human main character. The characters were likeable and fit their age and setting.
I did feel that the love story between the teen women was a bit rushed and would have loved to have seen their relationship grow and develop more. I got a sense of their connection and their backstory lends itself to the two of them having a fated connection.
Running was a quick read. The story line is intriguing and will definitely have to be read in its entirety of the series to fulfill the reader’s curiosity and will fill in any gaps left in this first instalment.
I look forward to reading the second instalment to see where Amanda Kay takes this story.

Running Excerpt © Amanda Kay 2017

Kea didn’t speak when I finished that part of my mom’s story, but I saw the tears welling up in her eyes. I covered her hand with mine, “Are you okay?”
“Was Randi lying?”
“About loving my mom? No. My mom never doubted her love, but everything else, my mom questions until this day.”
Kea sighed, “That’s understandable, from what you’ve told me so far.”
I nodded, “Yeah, I wish I could find answers for her.”
She squeezed my hand. “You will. We will.” The words rolled off her tongue like a vow.
“I hope so,” I whispered.
After we returned to the campsite, we did our usual routine.
Food, showers, and then crawling into our tent, ignoring the stuff Mya and crew were spewing our way. “Goodnight, Tezzi.” Kea yawned and I followed her lead.
“Goodnight, Kea.”
Closing my eyes, I fell asleep quickly. My body and mind exhausted from the days I had been having. Actually, telling my mom’s story to someone who wasn’t judging us and being in Vlukens Grove caused my heightened excitement and anxiety.
“Mommy, if you loved Randi, why did you marry daddy?” She sighed and stroked my hair.
“It was a means to an end.” I looked at her confused. I didn’t know what that meant.
“Did you love him?” I asked her with wide eyes.
“For a time, baby girl.”
“Are you happy alone?”
She looked down at me and kissed my forehead, “I’m not alone. I have you.”
I threw my arms around her, “I love you, mommy.”
“I love you so very much, baby,” she whispered, hugging me back. “Now lay down and I’ll tell you more of the story.”
I snuggled close to her, waiting for more. “Ready, mommy.”
“I went back to that spot, day after day, hoping to catch one glimpse of Randi with the trolls, but I never saw anything more. I felt lost, like I was losing everything, until one day…”
I hated when she paused, I needed to know. I wanted to know. “Tell me. Tell me.” I bounced excitedly.
“Calm down, Tezzi,” she warned gently. “The flames shot up just as the sun began to set. They danced around and chanted much like that first time, but then I saw her. I saw Randi. Their chants grew to praise as they all bowed. I tried to change my position and in doing so, I stepped on a stick, cracking it in the process.” I gasped. “Her eyes met mine and with a wave of her finger, she sent the trolls charging at me.”
“What did you do?”
“I ran. I ran as fast as I could. I ran until I couldn’t run anymore. I tripped and felt something touch me, but I crawled away until I could get onto my feet again.”
“More, mommy,” I begged, knowing it was late and she was going to stop.
She kissed my forehead, “Tomorrow, my sweet Tezzi.”

I am a Paranormal/Fantasy Adult and YA Romance Author
(M/F, F/F, & F/F/M stories)

I am a Florida girl at heart, but since getting married I have lived in Washington, South Carolina, and our latest move Connecticut. I hold a B.A. in Multimedia Journalism with a minor in Political Science from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Writing is something I love and since I am blessed to be a stay at home mom I thought I would try my hand at getting the stories in my head out and see how far I could go. I tried a few years ago to go through a Literary Agency, but it went nowhere. The self-publishing market was just starting to get hot so I self-published two books mainly for family and friends. I then discovered the world of New Adult. I wanted to stick with my paranormal roots and began thinking up story ideas that took on not only a paranormal element, but a fantasy element as well.

So, that is me in a nutshell. I am a little crazy and simple and I love my life and my family.

SYNOPSIS

Fools.

So many fools. Nothing but fools.

That worm of a detective, my mother, Paul. Fools—all of them. But Aspen, oh Aspen…she was the biggest fool of all.

Aspen Black, a seemingly ordinary woman of the compound, transformed into the utter bane of my existence in just a matter of months. She had the gall to question me, to seek the counsel of an outsider, and to disobey my word.

To add to her list of transgressions, Aspen recruited my own brother in the crusade against me. For this, they must both be punished. And their daughter, Ruthie, is the key to their retribution.

Aspen and Paul will pay for their crimes against the one true prophet. If it’s the very last thing I do.

REVIEW

I was very much anticipating this conclusion to the series. There were so many directions this story could have gone and I loved being on the edge my seat trying to figure out where Melissa Brown was going to take it. Prophet Takes All and this entire series is a roller coaster of emotions. I really enjoyed seeing the growth and change in the key characters as they navigated the rocky path of trying to balance their evolving love for one another with their beliefs and the cruel facts in front of them.
Prophet Takes All and the Sister Wives series is not a steamy sexy read. It is a story of the heart and Melissa Brown does a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged on every page without using sex. And these days not many books do that or can do that.
Well done Melissa Brown. This story tugged on my heart, questioned my beliefs and made me remember that true love can give you strength in adversity. Not to mention, change is good even when we don’t think so.

Blurb

From the New York Times Bestselling Author of The Resistance comes this new STANDALONE contemporary romance.

Because first love deserves a second chance

One month.

One movie.

One shot at a second chance.

I fell madly in love at first sight with Jane Lewis.

The girl with bright green eyes, a pretty smile, and great ass owned my heart. I thought she was happy with the status quo, but ten years later, I foolishly let her go. Despite dating other women, no one compares to my first love. We are meant to be together, and I’m going to try my damnedest to convince her of that.

Luke Anders tricked me. The deal was sealed before I knew he was behind it.

We agreed to be just friends. Simple. Easy. But it’s not just the weather that’s hot in Texas. I was a fool to think I could resist him. He knows how to work his charms and those kissable lips, that great jaw, and biceps. We are here to work, but he has become downright distracting.

I’m strong. I can handle one month of his flirtatious sexual torture. But if I happen to fall in bed with that sexy bastard for a night, or three, does that make me weak? Asking for a friend, of course.

I guess I’m about to find out when love gets messy, it’s not just the talk that’s dirty.

Review

I always enjoy an SL Scott story because while her stories are sexy and romantic, she fills her books with fun, through the characters humour and banter between each other. You can invest in the characters because they are relatable in that they say and do things, we mere day to day people do all the time. Yet she somehow manages to make these characters the perfect read and escape fantasy characters. Kind of like they’re attainable but unattainable. If that makes sense. So while I’ve come home from a hard days work and thrown off the bra and put on some yoga pants, a guy like Luke or Danny is every girl’s fantasy but I could totally score with them.
Scott is able to keep the books light but adds a dash of angst that grabs hold of your heartstrings and gives just the right of awww moments to the story.
I loved Jane. She’s a strong female character who doesn’t need a man to carry her through the story but damn if she doesn’t deserve one. She’s unassumingly beautiful, works hard and is like the one girlfriend who doesn’t care if you’re wearing any makeup and will eat a tub of ice cream with you on your worst day.
SL Scott does a great job of creating a vibe and energy to her stories. The chemistry between characters is evident and she keeps the story rolling steady with a great storyline that isn’t unidimensional.
Dirty Talk was one of those easy reads but you love every moment of it and you can’t put it down. It’s one you can talk about with friends and enjoy discussing all the sexiness that is Luke. He really is that sexy and sweet as heck.
Definitely one-click this book and while you’re at it pick up Sweet Talk (Luke’s best friend Danny). There’s a whole lotta sexy and fun packed into both books.

Meet S.L. Scott

New York Times and USA Bestselling Author, S. L. Scott, was always interested in the arts. She grew up painting, writing poetry and short stories, and willing her days away lost in a good book and the movies.

With a degree in Journalism, she continued her love of the written word by reading American authors like Salinger and Fitzgerald. She was intrigued by their flawed characters living in picture perfect worlds, but could still debate that the world those characters lived in were actually the flawed ones. This dynamic of leaving the reader invested in the words, inspired Scott to start writing with emotion while interjecting an underlying passion into her own stories.

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She’s obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. She dreams of seeing one of her own books made into a movie one day as well as returning to Europe. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she’s a pro.

SYNOPSIS

A TRUE STORY told through the voice of New York Times Bestselling author E.K. Blair.

She’s an author.
She’s a mother.
She’s a wife.
She’s a fraud.

A woman marked and bound by her own deceit, this is the astounding tale of how one choice knocked her world from its axis forcing her to battle through a year of scandal and betrayal, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

This is an intoxicatingly risqué stand-alone true story tangled in lust, heartbreak, and contrition.

“A scandalous tell-all and cautionary tale penned by E.K. Blair but based on the true-life story of another romance author. Author Anonymous is based entirely on real events that transpired in the life of another New York Times best-selling romance author. Blair was approached by Anonymous to pen the work, as it was perceived as too illicit, and possibly too damning, for Anonymous to write herself.” -New York Daily Post

REVIEW

An incredibly powerful and mesmerizing read. This by far is EK Blair’s best work yet.
I always say that there is nothing stronger in a story than the truth. Knowing that this book was the truthful account of one woman’s real life mistakes made the story that much more poignant and inexplicable. I cannot put into words accurately how raw this story was and how much it resonates with the very idea of being a woman. At the same time, it was incredibly difficult to keep judgement out of the equation while reading this. There were times I felt incredibly angry as a wife, mother and most importantly a woman that “Tori” would so knowingly carry on the way she did. When I could separate myself from the book, was when I could understand what she was feeling and what she was searching for or trying to achieve even if I didn’t agree with her indiscretions.
More than anything, I was constantly questioning what brought her to the point where she would betray and deceive everyone who loved her as well as herself. Because ultimately, she betrayed herself.
I cannot fathom what anonymous went through and I hope that she has found some strength and healing in herself to know her worth despite her grave lapse in judgement.
One never knows what will bring them to their breaking point until one hits it and no one can judge another.
EK brings her incredible wordsmith talents to the forefront of this story and there is no denying she can write. And write well. There is passion in the cadence of her words and she doesn’t hold back, that her prose is raw and gritty. Even her most unlikable characters have some sort of golden aura about them.
While this was a difficult read and maybe not to everyone’s tastes, it is well worth the read just to experience a literary orgasm at the hands, or rather the words of EK Blair.
